Our Syros Guide
What to see?
Our beloved Syros, often called “The Lady of the Cyclades,” is the administrative capital of the region and an island known for its cultural sophistication, rich history, and timeless charm. We hope you take some time to explore and enjoy it as much as we do.
Ermoupoli
Unlike the typical whitewashed arid Cycladic landscape, this capital was once one of the most important commercial ports in the Mediterranean — a legacy and richness you can still feel in its neoclassical architecture, vibrant marble squares, colourful grand mansions and hidden courtyards, that create a unique cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Take a walk through Miaoulis Square, dominated by the Town Hall designed by the architect Ernst Ziller, and wander through the town’s charming streets filled with cafés, boutiques, and seaside restaurants.
If you have time, we recommend visiting:
- The elegant Vaporia neighbourhood and Ciel Beach, a unique seaside deck swimming spot beneath the seafront neoclassical mansions, known as Syros "Little Venice"
- Saint Nicholas Cathedral in the Vaporia district
- Apollon Theatre, a 19th-century theatre inspired by the Teatro alla Scala
- Odos Chiou: The street hosting the central local food market since the 19th century. Visit the shop "Prekas" for traditional local products.
- The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary that houses an El Greco painting
- Visit the "Sykoutris Loukoumi Workshop" and taste the traditional treat of the island
- If you are interested to visit museums search directions for the "Historical Museum", "Cybeli Institute", and the "Industrial museum"
Ano Syros
Perched above the town is Ano Syros, a medieval Catholic settlement built by the Venetians. It is known for its narrow alleys, dense architecture, bougainvillea-covered stairways and panoramic sunset views over the Aegean sea. Culturally rich and historically artistic, this neighborhood gave birth to one of the most characteristic traditional genres of Greek music with its famous bouzouki instrument.
We recommend: Climbing to the catholic Church of Saint George at the top of the hill for breathtaking views over the town, the harbor, and the endless blue of the Aegean.
